Challenging the Artistically Inclined to Create Political Art

Challenge Create Political Art
Artwork by Banksy

I was inspired by Banksy’s new work in/on Palestine and realizing that negativity is counter productive, instead of ranting and raving about what “real art” is or should be, I’m simply going to challenge (beg?) my artistically inclined friends/”friends” to use their various talents to create political art.

Challenge Create Political Art It could be a song. Or a painting. Or a video. Or a performance piece. Whatever floats your boat. But it should be more than just pretty or enjoyable. It should be something that actually has a point of view. Something that raises awareness about an important issue. And that inspires people to take some kind of positive action.

Maybe there are already a ton of artists out there making this kind of art but I don’t see it. Where are the songs about political corruption (that you can actually dance to)? Where are the anti-violence paintings? Or the video art about economic inequality?

This stuff may not be fun to think about or pretty to look at but art has a unique ability to inspire change. I think artists have a unique responsibility to use their gifts to try and make the world a better place. Especially at a time like this. Maybe if enough people are interested we could have a show or even some kind of festival. But more importantly, maybe we can effect some real change.

Also, feel free to collaborate with each other. If you’re already making politically engaging art, thank you! Please feel free to leave a link here! I would love to help spread the word!
