Colbert Exposes Election Law

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

On Thursday, Stepehen Colbert turned the Super PAC that he founded over to Comedy Central host Jon Stewart so as not to run afoul of campaign laws while he explores running for the Republican nomination for president of the United States of South Carolina.

On Saturday, the Jon Stewart-controlled Super PAC released an ad attacking Colbert’s potential opponent Mitt Romney as a “serial killer” for his record of destroying corporations as the head of Bain Capital. He is promising a “major ad buy” in South Carolina, all the way from Charleston to North Charleston. The narration is by John Lithgow:

On Sunday, Stephen Colbert appeared as a guest on ABC News’ This Week with George “Snufalufagus.” Colbert: ‘The More Money You Have, the More You Can Speak’:

“I have nothing to do with that ad,” Colbert told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Sunday, mocking U.S. campaign laws. “I have no control over that ad. If anything in that ad is inaccurate, if he did not say corporations are people, if he did not make his money cutting up corporate people — I am not calling anyone a serial killer. I can’t tell Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow what to do. It’s not my Super PAC.”

“If that’s not accurate, I hope they take it down,” he added. “I don’t know if Mitt Romney is a serial killer. That’s a question he’s going to have to answer. … I do not want any untrue ads on the air that could in any way be traced back to me.”

Stephen Colbert is unpredictable, so there is no telling how far he will go with this bit of performance art. But he is certainly making his point regarding the insanity of our election laws.

UPDATE: Here is a “fun fact” that the corporate media villagers will never mention in their reporting. Bain Capital Owns Clear Channel (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Etc.):

Wouldn’t it be great if a Republican presidential candidate could just buy the support of just about every major conservative talk show host in America? Well, it may not be as far-fetched as you may think.

Clear Channel owns more radio stations (850) than anyone else in the United States. They also own Premiere Radio Networks, the company that syndicates the radio shows of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck, among others. Needless to say, Clear Channel basically owns conservative talk radio in the United States.

So who owns Clear Channel? Well, it turns out that Bain Capital is one of the primary owners of Clear Channel. Yes, you read that correctly. The company that Mitt Romney ran for so long is one of the “big bosses” over virtually all conservative talk radio in America.

* * *

Romney still has a huge financial stake in Bain Capital. We’re talking about millions upon millions of dollars. If you doubt this, just check out page 34 of this public financial disclosure report. So if you have been wondering why so many conservative talk show hosts are being so incredibly kind to Mitt Romney, this just might be the answer.

So do you think that any of those hosts is going to risk attacking Mitt Romney and Bain Capital during this election season?

Not likely.

NOTE: Technically this should require a legal disclaimer during every broadcast disclosing that Bain Capital is an owner of Clear Channel and Premiere Radio Networks.
