In a recent event at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, moderator Mark Daniel Geaner, also the Institute’s director, introduced an all star lineup of panelists to analyze the trends in youth voting, especially among aging millennial voters, a generation roughly corresponding to those born anytime from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. Published on October 12, 2018, the video below carries the entire event, with each panel member having the opportunity to give a brief overview of their experiences with youth voters.
Panelists offered in-depth analysis of the best tools for viewers to successfully impact their own community as well. The question and answer section was also a highlight. The first and second questions from the audience targeted the issue of campaign financing and the panel members responded with each giving reasons why they adopt their own particular strategies for engaging millennials, comparing this election with previous years, how they have changed and what they think could be done to stabilize the system.
Political campaigns spend big money targeting millennial voters via social media and this was the subject of the third question put forward by a grad student in Harvard University’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. The moderator directed the question to Michelle Wu who talked about how she was now viewing social media as a vital means of reaching out especially with the lack of resources at many newspapers. Often, she explained, there might just be one full-time reporter who intends to cover even the most controversial issues.
More questions followed from the audience as is seen in the video below and each panel member got to address the issues concerned. The event’s panelists were:
- Eloise Kaehny – Student and National Campaign Committee member
- Eric Lesser – Former White House Aide and Massachusetts House Senator
- Lange Luntao – Board Trustee Member for the Stockton Unified School District
- Svante Myrick – Politician and incumbent mayor of Ithaca
- Ryan Quarles – Agriculture Commissioner of Kentucky and former Kentucky Representative
- Michelle Wu – Lawyer, politician and the current youngest and first ever Asian-American to serve in the Boston City Council as Councillor.
The video lasted for about one hour and thirty minutes. Take a look!
