Primaries and caucuses are both means by which voters select which candidate will represent their party in a general election. These processes serve to narrow the field of potential candidates while identifying frontrunners. Candidates’ preparation for state primaries and caucuses can start years before the presidential voting actually begins and often helps demonstrate whether they have enough support to sustain a campaign.
