The earliest Americans handled education at the tribal level; Native American parents and elders handed down tribal values, stories, languages and customs to children. For the colonists, too, home-schooling and sometimes church schooling were the norm. Since more Americans can correctly identify Michael Jackson than the Bill of Rights, educators clearly have their work cut out for them. And the stakes are arguably higher now than ever, given the need to stay competitive in a global job market.
