A small crowd of around 15 people were at 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell in Harlem at 1pm today for a last minute rally and press conference for Ramsey Orta, 22, the man who filmed NYPD cop Daniel Pantaleo placing an illegal, fatal chokehold on unarmed Eric Garner, with four other cops holding him face down. All the while, Garner gasped “I can’t breathe” eleven times before dying.
Daniel Pantaleo, along with the other cops, were not indicted even with the video footage which has been viewed worldwide 2,666,533 times as of this writing.
The only one arrested and currently in jail is Ramsey Orta, the man who filmed the entire incident on his phone. Ramsey Orta was arraigned back in August on gun charges which he believes his arrest is in retaliation for filming them fatally choke Eric Garner. Ramsey says he “100% sure the cops set him up”.
Ramsey Orta’s aunt and mother were out making brief statements.
The bail for Orta was set for $100,000 for drug sales.
NYPD is saying that Orta tried to hide a gun on a 17 year old girl. Ora insisted the gun was not his. “When they searched me they didn’t find nothing on me”, Orta said. Ora also said the same cop who searched him told Orat that “karma is a bitch”, and what goes around comes around.
Orta also said, “he had nothing to do with it”, I would be stupid to walk around with a gun after me being in the spotlight.”
He also explained what he was doing out:
My wife asked me to go get a Yoo-hoo and a Tylenol PM, so that’s what I decided to do. I knew that they were following me from my house to KFC (on Victory Boulevard near Bay Street). When I went inside the bathroom in KFC and I came back out, they were still following me. So I walked up the hill towards Central Avenue, next thing I know, they jump out on me.
They searched me, they didn’t find nothing. They searched the girl, they found the gun on her. Then all of a sudden, they’re telling me to turn around.
Orya’s family also said NYPD had been following Orta around since he filmed the viral video of Eric Garner’s death. Ora’s wife said Ramsey told her he felt they were trying got pin something on him. The day after Eric Garner’s death was ruled a homicide the cops find someone next to him with a gun that Orta supposedly passed off out in public when he knows he’s being watched? It makes no sense, said Orta’s Family.
