A new post Ohio Green Declares for Governor by Richard Winger from Ballot Access News has the latest information. Third party candidates are picking up notable wins across the country. Is Ohio next?:
On November 24, Dennis Spisak said that he will seek the Green Party’s nomination for Governor of Ohio. He was the party’s nominee in 2010, and he polled 1.52% in a four-party race. It is very likely that the Green Party will intervene in the pending Libertarian Party lawsuit, arguing that the new ballot access law cannot be applied for the 2014 election. Assuming that lawsuit wins, Ohio will hold a Green Party primary. If the lawsuit does not win, the Green Party will need approximately 28,000 valid signatures before early July 2014 in order to place Spisak on the November ballot with the party label. Or he could run as a statewide independent for 5,000 valid signatures, which are due in May. See this story about Spisak.
Spisak has made a list of his concerns about the incumbent John Kasich:
- John Kasich is silent in supporting the Healthcare For All Ohioans Act.
- John Kasich is silent on advancing blue-green renewable energy and jobs in Ohio.
- John Kasich is silent on advocating a progressive fair tax system in Ohio.
- John Kasich is silent on true school finance reform.
- John Kasich is silent on foreclosure and finance reform.
- John Kasich is silent on the environment and fracking.
Also, from the website of Spisak’s last run for Governor, you get a bit more about the candidate and even his view on election reform and participatory government. He is a big fan of the localization of government:
Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. We will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process…
…Our actions and policies should be motivated by long-term goals. We seek to protect valuable natural resources, safely disposing of or “unmaking” all waste we create, while developing a sustainable economics that does not depend on continual expansion for survival. We must counterbalance the drive for short-term profits by assuring that economic development, new technologies, and fiscal policies are responsible to future generations who will inherit the results of our actions.
