Ballot Access News, written by election reform expert Richard Winger had the latest news about a new independent candidates attempt to run for US Senate in Nebraska at Prominent Nebraska Businessman Will Run for U.S. Senate in 2014 as an Independent. Take a look:
Jim Jenkins, of Callaway, Nebraska, has announced that he will be an independent candidate for U.S. Senate in 2014. See this story. He had planned to run as an independent in 2012, but a state law barred him because he had been registered as a Democrat in the recent past. There is no incumbent in the 2014 Senate race. So far no Democrat has announced. Nebraska has not had an independent candidate on the ballot for U.S. Senate since 2002.

Jenkins was raised in Custer County, but left Nebraska for about 20 years to attend school and work in the restaurant and business world in Boston, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. He returned to Nebraska in 1996, developing a steakhouse chain known as Whiskey Creek. He sold that company a decade ago. He also helped to found Skeeter Barnes restaurants, and currently serves on the company’s board of directors. Jenkins is part owner of a ranch and farm operation near Callaway. Jenkins said he would use some of his own money to finance his race, but he would not rely solely on his personal checkbook to pay for his campaign.
