An influential group of Iranian officials known as the Guardian Council has approved the historic nuclear agreement that the United States and the six world powers (a group consisting of The U.S, France, Russia, the U.K, Russia and Germany) agreed upon on in Vienna Austria, on July 14th. The vote moves the deal one step closer to actual implementation amid fierce disagreement in Iran and beyond.
“The majority of the Guardian Council did not find the bill, to be against religious law and the constitution” Guardian Council spokesman Nejatollah Ebrahimian said regarding the nuclear agreement, which is seen as a historic step forward between Iran, seen as a country who supports terror and chaos throughout the region by many world powers.
Under the new agreement, there has been a set of compromises that have been put forth by both sides which are seen to be the major issues that need to be talked about. Some of the compromises that the United States have agreed upon include allowing Iran to continue enrichment of potential bomb making and to allow Iran to continue operating an underground facility. Parties also agreed there will be no anytime anywhere inspections for potential United Nations inspectors after the bill is formally agreed upon by Iran.
“Members raised objections to the bill and found it contrary to the constitution” Mr. Ebrahimian continued in his statement regarding the council’s approval of the bill. “At the end, a majority of the council members voted that the parliamentary legislation is not against the constitution and Shariah” he continued.
The Guardian Council is a select group of 12 senior Iranian officials who are appointed to make sure that any laws that are passed within Iran do not go against the Iranian constitution and or Shariah law. The nuclear agreement passed the Iranian Parliament by a 161-59 vote with 13 members withholding their vote.
Along with the previous compromises already stated, the bill allows Iran to, “withdraw from the agreement if world powers do not lift sanctions, impose new sanctions or restore previous ones.” The official title of the nuclear agreement is “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.”
“This deal demonstrates that American diplomacy can bring about real and meaningful change” President Obama said regarding the agreement. “Every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off”, the president continued.
One of the compromises that Iran has conceded to the West includes turning the Fordow facility, an important nuclear facility, into a research facility and have scientist from around the world work together on projects.
“This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction. We should seize it,” President Obama continued.
Ultimately, the nuclear law that was approved by Iran and the six majors is a good start for adversaries that have seen each other as enemies over the last several decades. However, there must be a rigorous enforcement making sure that Iran does not cheat and continue forward on its enrichment program that many countries view as being hostile to peace in the Middle East and throughout the world.
