Months after the FBI revealed part of Maryland’s voting infrastructure was tied to a Russian oligarch, election officials confirmed Thursday the state’s voter database is now hosted by a new, American-owned company.
State officials were previously unaware until July 2018 that Russian billionaire Vladimir O. Potanin had major investments linked to the software vendor, ByteGrid. ByteGrid hosted the servers and software for Maryland’s voter database, as well as the state’s unofficial election night results website.
The State Board of Elections said a private company is needed to operate both pieces of voting infrastructure, since an elevated level of technical know-how is required.
