Voters and officials in the city were angry that people had to make the choice between exercising their right to vote and the health of themselves and their communities, Natasha Korecki, Caitlin Oprysko, and I wrote. “What’s happening in Wisconsin today flies in the face of every pronouncement that we have heard in the last three weeks pertaining to public health,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in an interview. “There is no scientific exemption for voting when it comes to Covid-19, and to pretend that there is is insanity.”
Democrats who spoke with POLITICO were furious with Republican legislative leaders, who defended not postponing the election. “It made no sense to cancel the election and just push it off to a future date, with no idea how it was going to work and no better plan,“ state House Speaker Robin Vos said in an interview with The Journal Times. “You are incredibly safe to go out“ and vote, he said, citing curbside voting and other efforts to mitigate risk. Vos was wearing a mask and other personal protective equipment as he gave the interview, because he was serving as a poll worker.
There could be more litigation coming in Wisconsin, as well. Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler told us that he’d be surprised if there wasn’t a “firestorm of litigation” as a result of the election.
