A new political party is taking root in California and setting out to compete with the juggernaut Republicans and Democrats. The new, still unnamed, party is the project of former five-term Republican Congressman from California, Tom Campbell, who is determined to encourage some kind of third party to challenge the state’s duopoly.
According to California law, it is possible for a new political party to get onto the ballot if it gathers 700,000 signatures or gets 60,000 voters to switch their voter registration to the new party. The plan is to focus on the 60,000 voter registration switches because such things can be done online and can even be helped by a ‘targeted email pitch’, according to party founder Tom Campbell in a great overview of the party conducted by nonprofit journalism venture CALmatters.
Campbell, born in 1952 Chicago, was regarded as a moderate Republican and has gained prominence recently as a leading member of the former Republican members of Congress that denouncing Donald Trump’s candidacy in a widely publicized open letter during the 2016 election.
Most Americans will welcome another electoral choice but there is still no conclusion as to what the new party stands for, as evidence by the fact that there is yet no decision on the name the party will bear. Though the new party will not be on the ballot in 2018, they are planning to have a candidate on ballot for the 2020 legislature. One wishes them good luck.
