NEWARK — Five independent candidates for U.S. Senate have filed a petition with the secretary of the Senate challenging today’s special election. The complaint questions the constitutionality, legality and validity of the election.
New Jersey’s special election for U.S. Senate on Wednesday appears to have set a record for the lowest voter turnout for a general election in state history. While the results won’t be final until certified by the Secretary of State. State Senate President Stephen Sweeney said today the light turnout in Wednesday’s special U.S. Senate election showed New Jersey needs to change its law in the event a Senate seat unexpectedly becomes vacant. “We need to make sure this is the end”.
