On Business and Power

The United States government was founded upon the belief that government is of the people, by the people and for the people. However, it appears that the country has become a top heavy economy where there is significant income inequality between the very rich and everyone else below them. The government is the only entity big enough to stop business from having all this control and economic sway, yet the United States is failing at this.

The United States government passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that is responsible for the biggest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. In addition, the cost of healthcare is about to rise to an astronomical level and the government withheld SNAP food benefits to inflict pain on the opposition party with the goal of forcing them to cave to end the government shutdown. This has created a lack of trust in the government which is supposed to protect citizens and help make their lives better. The Republicans decry any benefits to people but because of the trade war the republican congress wants to bail out farmers due to their policy decisions. They want to inflict as much pain as possible yet will not take the blame for any of the causes of this pain. There is currently a fight about bringing in Argentine beef to America. Argentine beef is known to be lower quality and be more open to diseases. Moreover, the Trump administration just gave Argentina a 40 billion dollar bail out, which is now the money being used by Argentina to help them produce beef that will be competing with American ranchers. Due to the trade war with China, the Chinese are now buying soybeans from Argentina and Brazil and not Americans. That business is not going to come back to the United States since the Chinese are now able to meet their needs elsewhere.

The Trump administration and republicans are telling the farmers and ranchers that they should blame coastal democrats who now buy lab grown meat. This continues to demonstrate that the government is not helping the people and just looking for a deal to help out friends who are already rich looking to make more money. Now the hedge funds who are in Argentina can make more money but what about the Americans in the Midwest? It is not just the Trump administration but you can see this spreading down to the states. For example, Nebraska has put a ban on manufacturing, distribution, and sale of lab-grown or cultivated meat. Instead of looking at policies helping big businesses, hedge funds, and Republicans again hurt Americans with a culture war policy. The more I think about this the more I feel this is becoming a socialist government for the companies who know how to get to President Trump.

In New York City, Zohran Mamdani has been elected as mayor and many people are panicking about some of his policy ideas such as: city run grocery stores, free universal child care and fast and free buses as they deem these as socialist policies. When I look at these, it reminds me of the Nordic countries where the government is trying to make the bottom not as far down and the top not as high, which actually shows a healthy society where everyone can succeed and not a zero sum. However, the real socialist policies which are more Chinese-like where they pick winners and losers and then invest in companies is from President Trump himself. For example, the United States has a 10 percent investment in Intel and is completing a contracting process with Westinghouse for 80 billion dollars. By January 30th, 2029 if the Westinghouse reaches a 30 billion dollar valuation, the United States government will then be a shareholder of this company due to the IPO. This means the United States government would be controlling the means of production and how the company runs.

With the United States government only caring about making a deal and money it can no longer be trusted to look out for the people. How can a democracy survive when only the people at the top are making the money and everyone else has to suffer? How much money does one need without giving back to the people who built those businesses for them? Everything is becoming more expensive, people have less time to pay attention to what’s going on and it is imperative that they watch what is actually happening and not what they are saying is happening.
