A democracy revolution in voter access for the state and perhaps more as Oregon registers all voters automatically at the DMV
A new article in the Guardian, “Oregon’s ‘motor voter’ law will add drivers to electoral rolls automatically”, explains that Oregon is moving forward with plans to register all voter automatically, a revolution in voter access for the state and perhaps more. Will your state be next?
According to the Guardian article, “the new HB2177 law signed by Governor Kate Brown this week reverses the trend of restricting the franchise by linking up the DMV and electoral databases”, a long held dream of voter turnout advocates. Myrna Pérez from NYU’s highly influential Brennan Center for Justice commented, “It’s very encouraging that at a time when politicians all across the country are trying to manipulate the rules of the game so that some people can vote and some cannot, Oregon is moving forward to get many more eligible voters on the rolls.”
According to the Guardian, “The Brennan Center is calling on states to go even further and use data held by several different government agencies, not just the DMV, to set up automatic registration of voters – a move that it believes could expand the size of the US electorate by 50 million people.”
