Hundreds of people stood anxiously waiting a couple of hours for a glimpse of Pope Francis as he drove by on the West Side Highway near Carlisle Street on Friday morning.
Also, there waiting to show their support for the Pope were a handful of Occupy Wall Streeters doing performance art trying to get their message out to the Pope to address the crimes of Wall Street bankers who have gone unpunished and unprosecuted.
Many who came to view the Pope took an interest in the performance artists and were snapping pictures while the performers wore masks and held a sign reading, “Welcome to Wall Street FRANCIS”.
The performers told me they were there in support of the Pope who they feel is coming out into the light with many of the issues that are in need of being addressed.
Many feel the issues the Occupy Wall Street movement brought to light are blatantly legitimate and have clearly not been addressed. There has been an increase in the police state and people being arrested for peacefully protesting their rights, yet, not one banker or CEO was held into account for the trillions missing from the economy and the Fed.
Mainstream media, MSNBC, took shots of the performers. Reporters from the New York Times spoke with them about why they were there and the message they were trying to bring.
Many tourists stopped to ask what their message was and why they were there while they snapped away taking pictures on the steps of historic Federal Hall.
