Democracy is in decline worldwide for the 16th year in a row, according to a new report.

Countries that saw declines in their democracies outnumbered the number of countries that saw improvements in 2021, according to the report by Freedom House, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom and human rights.

The report, released annually, evaluates the state of freedom in 195 countries and 15 territories, assigning each a score between zero and 4 on 25 different indicators relating to political rights and civil liberties.
