An interesting case has arose out of a local battle for state senate. Republican officials in Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against Democrat Lindsey Williams running for the 38th Senate District. The lawsuit intends to prove William’s ineligibility and have her name taken off the ballot. The argument advanced is that she didn’t meet the requirement of at least four years residency in the district she’s running for office.
In 2014, she was employed by National Whistleblowers Center and she registered to vote in Maryland and a speeding ticket she got is biting her real hard as it proves her vehicle’s registration of November 10, 2015 is listed in Maryland. Whoops!
Williams however, argued the charges saying that, “I accepted that job offer, gave notice to my employer and promptly came to Pennsylvania to start the process of moving here,” according to WTAE. “I had the intent to change my residency and a physical presence in the state, and that is what the law requires, and so I am legally a resident, eligible to run for office.”
Some believe this is an argument which was refuted with claims that her affidavit was fraudulent and that in such cases, the judge could wipe her name off the ballot. Pennsylvania Democratic Party attorney, Adam Bonin, said it’s passed the time for which such a petition could be signed and that the judge is not expected to get involved before next month’s election. We will see.
