Turkish government officials have been facing mounting protest since May of 2013 calling for mass resignations, including notably Turkish president Abdullah Gul and Prime minister Tayyip Erdogan. Now the government has placed a nationwide ban restricting access to Twitter and YouTube. The moves come as the nation has been mired in a year long nationwide protest against the current regime of the Gul administration.
The protest which started on May 28th, 2013 has accused the current regime of corruption and has called on the resignation of the president and prime minister. Among the accusations that have been levied against the current Turkish government include increasing restrictions on human rights, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The ban on twitter, which took place on Wednesday March 26th, was followed by another move by the Turkish telecoms authority (aka the TIB) on Thursday March 27th.
On Thursday, the TIB announced that the government has also placed restrictions on the popular media networking website YouTube. Twitter representatives have called the restrictions placed on its website as being “disproportionate and illegal” while Prime Minister Erdogan said that he would “root out” the social networking website. Also on Tuesday, Prime Minister Erdogan also added the accusations that twitter were “threatening the national security of his country”.
And Turkey Blocked Access to Twitter and YouTube
In a statement released by Twitter officials, the representative went onto say “We expect the government to restore access to twitter immediately so that its citizens can continue an open online dialogue ahead of the elections.” Elections take place in Turkey on Sunday, March 30th, 2014. However, with the elections taking place on Sunday there is a high probability and high speculation that the protest and unrest across the country will continue as the ruling AKP party is currently leading in the last poll which was released, 45% to 35%. Many will be watching to see the results.
