Many Americans will readily admit that their faith in the country’s electoral system has been shaken. From Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to the technological glitches and error-ridden results that marred last week’s Democratic Iowa caucus, Americans’ current level of confidence in their elections is one of the worst across the world’s wealthiest democracies. That’s according to a newly published Gallup poll which found that a mere 40% of the U.S. public have confidence in the honesty of their elections. As low as that figure is, a considerable swathe of the U.S. electorate expressing a lack of trust in the voting system is nothing new.
