The following is from an excerpt from the article, Most Utahns support ballot initiative establishing independent redistricting commission, by Bob Bernick, Contributing Editor at Utah Policy. Take a look:
A healthy majority of Utahns support a citizen initiative that would replace the Legislature’s partisan redrawing of U.S. House and legislative districts with a bipartisan, independent commission, a new UtahPolicy.com poll finds. Our latest Dan Jones & Associates survey shows that 57 percent of Utahns support such a change in the every-10-year political process…
…If approved by voters next November, the new Redistricting Commission would consist of seven members, three picked by Republicans in the state House and Senate, three by minority Democrats in those bodies, and one by the governor.
Also, more information can be found at this article from the local FOX affiliate:
In an interview with FOX 13, Wright and Becker said the ballot initiative would create an independent redistricting commission made up of seven members appointed by the governor, House Speaker, Senate President, House Minority Leader, Senate Minority Leader and majority and minority leadership. They draw the boundaries and make a recommendation to the legislature, which would vote on it.
The ballot initiative wants municipal and county boundaries preserved in a single district, maps geographically compact, and preserving “communities of interest” and neighborhoods. Using political data like voting history, candidate data or party data would be prohibited.
