On 19 October 2018, the University of Chicago’s, Institute of Politics (IOP) held an event on a book “Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy”. The book is written by two-time New York Times bestselling author Jonah Goldberg. In this extraordinary piece of work, Goldberg gave an intensive transition of political values to depraved suicidal susceptibility of the American democracy.
The Director of the Institute of Politics, David Axelrod, inaugurated the event by urging every eligible voter to vote in the midterms, as a privilege and a responsibility. Acknowledging the role voting plays in the American democracy, he made known the possibility of voting early and on campus which is being done for the first time in the University of Chicago and then handed over the stage to Holden Higgins, an Economics student at the University of Chicago who introduced the panel.
Mary Katharine Ham, CNN Political Commentator moderated the event and guest speaker was Jonah Goldberg. Here is a brief description of the book.
“At a moment when authoritarianism, tribalism, identity politics, nationalism, and cults of personality are rotting our democracy from within, Goldberg exposes the West’s suicidal tendencies on both sides of the ideological aisle. For the West to survive we must renew our sense of gratitude for what our civilization has given us and rediscover the ideals that led us out of the bloody muck of the past – or back to the muck we will go.
The video lasted about an hour and ten minutes. Take a look!
