The Exact Match ballot rule made by Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is keeping away thousands of eligible voters from the ballot. On October 17, 2018, DC reported a story about a large number of vote-by-mail ballots cast in Gwinnett County in Georgia being thrown out by election officials.
The problem seems to have persisted as “Hundreds — perhaps thousands — of ballots are being rejected because voters’ signatures don’t appear to match the ones on file, or because the voter oath is signed on the wrong line, two lawsuits claim. And would-be voters don’t get a chance to fix the errors or provide explanations, they say.”
Well, voters in the State are not taking the issue lightly. They are set to sue the State over this problem. Erik Larson and Andrew Harris have reported that “allegations that Georgia’s Republican-led election officials are unfairly throwing out mailed ballots over hyper-technical errors are set to go before a federal judge two weeks before Election Day.”
The practice of throwing out these ballots appears to be particularly worrying for voters and public opinion because it appears to target potentially democratic voters. This is the allegation brought forward by the complainants and its significance lies in the fact that the State’s Secretary, Brian Kemp, is a Republican and is running for Governor while overseeing elections.
