“All Eyes on Privacy: Transparency in the New Economy” Poll Briefing and Live-Stream Event
Privacy has shifted to a top-of-mind issue for many Americans in recent weeks, as more information is revealed about recent government activity and access to information. The culmination includes disclosures last week about secret government surveillance programs to collect data on people’s phone and Internet activity. And with technology becoming progressively more pervasive, how do Americans feel about its impact on their personal, economic, and political privacy?
To examine that question—and other thorny issues surrounding privacy more broadly—sister publications National Journal and The Atlantic will host a briefing on Thursday, June 13, 2013, featuring top policy and industry stakeholders and drawing on key findings from a new Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll.
In addition to keynote interviews with Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Member of the Bipartisan Congressional Privacy Caucus, and Jon Leibowitz, former chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, the speaker line-up includes:
- Nigel Jacob, Board Member, Code for America & Co-Chair, Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics
- Marc Rotenberg, President & Executive Director, Electronic Privacy Information Center
- Evan Selinger, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Rochester Institute of Technology & Fellow, Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technology
Ronald Brownstein, editorial director of Atlantic Media, and Steve Clemons, Washington editor-at-large of The Atlantic, will serve as the event’s moderators. Elizabeth Baker Keffer, president of AtlanticLIVE, and Marci Kaminsky, Senior Vice President of Public Relations for the Allstate Insurance Company, will deliver welcome remarks.
Findings from the latest Allstate-National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll will be available on Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m., ET. This marks the latest collaboration between the organizations, which quarterly conduct surveys that examine the economic challenges and opportunities facing middle class Americans.
