Data from the Sangamon County Clerk’s office shows the cost of putting on an election is steadily rising and experts don’t anticipate that will change anytime soon. The 2018 Midterm Election cost Sangamon County roughly $673,000. That’s almost $200,000 more than what the county paid two decades ago. In 1998, Sangamon County paid roughly $483,000.
“It’s a major responsibility of county clerks and it’s something that is not likely going to get less expensive or less complex as we move forward,” said Kent Redfield, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Illinois Springfield.
