President of Indonesia. He was Governor of Jakarta from 2012 to 2014 and Mayor of Surakarta from 2005 to 2012. He is the first Indonesian president not to have emerged from the country’s political elite or as an army general. Jokowi was nominated by his party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), to run in the 2012 Jakarta gubernatorial election with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (often known as Ahok) as his running mate.
