India Leads ‘One Billion Rising’ for Women
Indians were at the forefront of global protests on Thursday in the One Billion Rising campaign for women’s rights, galvanized by the recent fatal gang-rape that shocked the country. Flash mobs, marches, singing and dances were planned in about 200 countries as part of the campaign’s day of action.
When Indonesian high court judge Muhammad Daming Sunusi joked during vetting for a Supreme Court position this month that women might enjoy rape, he sparked an outcry that, activists say, helped drive nearly a thousand Indonesians onto the streets today.
Hundreds of women danced on the Spanish Steps and near the Colosseum in Rome on Thursday as part of the world-wide One Billion Rising Campaign for women’s rights. “It’s moving to see women dancing, fighting and above all sharing a positive energy against violence,” said Tiziana Fornari as she danced.
