Stephan Kyburz writes for Democracy Chronicles from Porto, Portugal. He is host and producer of the podcast Rules of the Game​​ – discussing democratic institutions. He is a political economist with a PhD in Economics from the University of Bern in Switzerland. He previously held positions as Research Fellow at the Department of Government of the London School of Economics and Political Science and as Visiting Fellow at the Center for Global Development. His research interests are in economic development, conflict studies, and political economy. He has decided to dedicate his time towards the public discussion of democratic institutions. He strongly believes in the wisdom of the people and the power of knowledge. People should be more aware of the political institutions that govern their lives.

Elite political power can be broken down. Bringing about that institutional change is hard though. It requires broad awareness in the population.
