Consequences: A Country Gets the President it Deserves

I’ve heard it said, that a country gets the president it deserves. Does that count if that person cheated to gain power? It seems amazing that many Republican voters still support Trump. What are they thinking?

He’s just like us! He’ll give us tax breaks and he sounds like the typical talking head on Fox News, so we will be ok.

Hey, he’s just getting rid of the people around him that don’t agree with him, they will just impede his progress.

It doesn’t matter that he just shoots from the hip with no long term goals. He calls himself a great Christian and caters to the church so we’ll be alright.

He really wants to build that hugely expensive border wall, so it’s ok we won’t get the actual infrastructure spending he promised.

The stock market drop may have something to do with Trump’s huge tax breaks to the rich, but why bother to learn from the past?

I don’t care that he doesn’t believe in global warming, it won’t affect me.

It ok to dismantle the EPA, it’s not in my backyard.

Sure we can colonize Mars if we destroy this planet. Trump and his friends will take us all with them!

It’s ok to put clueless people like Betsy DeVos in charge of education it may affect the future, it won’t affect me.

He burns bridges with anyone who opposes his views, but that’s ok we need a new direction.

That’s fine that he wants to isolate us from our allies by taking us out of NATO and the UN, hey, they were only interfering and who wants to be held accountable or told what to do?

It’s ok that Trump treats most of the dignitaries from democratic countries with contempt, we won’t ever need their help.

He likes to spend obscene amounts of money on the military and act tough, like Reagan, so he’s my kind of president.

It’s fine that he acts like an out-of-control world despot. What’s the worst that can happen?

About Jack Jones

Jack Jones writes for Democracy Chronicles from Chicago’s south suburbs where he grew up. He is a union electrician Local 134, certified minister from Berean University, AYSO board member and coach, basketball coach, Cub Scout leader, husband, father and social participant. Jack considers himself a gourmet junk food chef, political writer, musician and likes to contribute to the world around him. A former deacon and chaplain at Cook County Jail in Chicago, he feels that our out-of-control corporate, religious and political environment is to blame for many of the problems in the world today. Jack believes we need to get money out of politics and that the church should take care of people instead of trying to get hypocrites elected to public office.
