Corruption and the Root of All Evil

find the Root of All Evil

We cannot trust elected officials to protect our welfare. Cast aside foolish labels such as Democrat and Republican to find the Root of All Evil

Let’s face it; we are all slaves to it. The way our economic system works keeps most people tied down in debt, and with the high interest rates off loans, mortgages, etc., and many people find themselves having to pass down their unpaid dues to future generations. But who determines these rates? Is there a mathematical formula that decides what is fair and what isn’t? Why does a poor man pay more tax than a rich man? Can such moral questions be quantified into algebraic equations? Well, it seems the answer, at least for the wealthy elite bankers in America, would be yes.

The growth in Root of All Evil
The growth in total US GDP vs median US household income.

The only equation which determines how big business is regulated seems to be citizens, too complacent to protest plus politicians willing to help save these corporations financially as well as the corrupt bankers who give themselves bonuses with our hard earned tax money after breaking major financial laws – equals yes. Explanation? Too big to fail: the idea that we are so dependent on these banks that we must rescue them from the consequences of their own actions. Does it not stir up some resentment in people, some vague sense of injustice, that our government has cited such a ridiculous statement as the reason for the bailout and why no charges have been bought against these bankers?

It makes me believe that if this is the attitude our elected officials are taking on this crisis, it is up to us, the people, to rise up against it and abolish these criminal institutions. Over the past five years, the middle class, the backbone of any strong democratic nation, have been almost entirely wiped out. While GM received $27 billion, AIG received $23 billion, and banks made a $19 billion profit, millions of people foreclosed on their homes, lost their jobs, and are facing dismal poverty.

Has anything greatly improved after all the billions of dollars poured into our federal government and these companies? No, I say; the rich continue to get richer and the amount of poor continues to grow. While our propaganda-ridden media tells us otherwise, there are countries in the world, true democratic nations, such as Iceland, who’s government has taken strides in protecting its citizens and placing the blame on those who are responsible; the political and corporate elite. In Iceland, the Prime Minister was indicted, two hundred criminal charges were brought against bank executives, the banks were allowed to fail and home owners debt was forgiven exceeding one hundred and ten percent of the home value.

In America, no charges have been brought against anyone in financial power, banks were bailed out by taxpayers and any burden of home owner liability was not forgiven and rather placed on the individual. Another important thing to realize regarding the “too big to fail” principles spread by our media is that any educated knows that the basic principle of capitalism or a ‘lassiez-faire’ economy consists of letting businesses grow or fail without government interference. It would appear then, with this bailout, we have adhered to more of a socialist approach to ‘solving’ the problem, without adhering to the socialist principle of government taking care of its citizens. And the hard numbers prove this; State Housing, Small Business Loan Aid and FHA Refinance Loans for Homeowners were all given the least amount of money in the bailout.

This gives the banks and other big corporations a dangerous power; the o.k. from our government to do what they please because of this passive attitude. We cannot trust our elected officials to protect our welfare, so that means we must look to each other. Cast aside foolish labels such as ‘Democrat’ and ‘Republican’; to have two sets of people fighting constantly with each other while both are being taken advantage of is exactly the opposite of what our founding fathers wanted for this nation. They envisioned a great nation that provided for the populous many different choices for major political positions, and an informed people who would vote for the candidate that best represented the people, not a hostile adversarial system where people vote based on dated, warped misinformation-ridden ideologies, stuck with two candidates funded by big business with no interest in the welfare of the general populous and certainly no interest in being honest with them either. When a government can no longer provide for its people, it is time for that government to be reconstructed. Let us strive to become the nation our founding fathers dreamed about; a nation based on unity, harmony, justice, truth and equality.
