Global Voices: Journalism Under Threat in Nicaragua
From Democracy Digest.

The opposition group Nicaraguan Patriotic Alliance (APN) claimed responsibility on social media for a series of small explosions Sunday, Reuters reports (HT: Cipher Brief). Nicaragua has experienced demonstrations against the government of President Daniel Ortega since April 2018 over planned cuts to welfare benefits. The demonstrations spread into broader protests against Ortega, and subsequent clashes between pro-government forces and protesters have claimed more than 300 lives and prompted thousands of Nicaraguans to go into exile, rights groups say. The APN has promised similar actions to follow.

The National Press Club International Correspondents Committee and Press Freedom Team hosts a discussion on “Global Voices: Journalism Under Threat in Nicaragua.”

Speakers: Carlos Fernando Chamorro, founder and editor of Confidencial; Lucia Pineda Ubau, news director at 100% Noticias; Anibal Toruno, director & owner of Radio Dario; Sergio Leon, director & owner of La Costenisima; and Maria Pena, digital reporter for Telemundo.

6:30 p.m. September 25, 2019. Venue: National Press Club, 14th and F Streets NW, Washington, D.C. RSVP
