Citizens United: A Battle of Money vs Democracy

Battle of Money vs Democracy

Democracy cannot exist in a nation that allows unlimited campaign contributions. In America, it is time to demand change and this begins with staging mass protests against the Citizens United decision and the system of election campaign financing. Our freedoms and our rights hang in the balance.

Citizens United is an act of evil that has usurped the hard-won power of the people. As it stands, people are considered equal to money in American law. As Mitt Romney said in 2011 during his campaign for President, “Corporations are people, my friend.” This is the law today.

But if we use this logic you are saying the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights mean nothing. If corporations are people, are little corporations and big corporations equal? Or are big corporations more equal? We already know the answer.

The entities with the most money are self serving and not interested in doing what is right for everyone. I’m sure some super-wealthy have death bed conversions where they leave some money to the poor but Americans today can’t count on it. And Americans are no longer willing to trust that things will just work out. We must be part of the answer!

American elections were put in place for the betterment and protection of people. But it is now clear that since the Reagan era, the wealth gap between rich and poor has increased substantially. In this context of economic inequality especially, Citizens United really is not only violating the Constitution that our fascist Supreme Court swore to uphold, but it is directly responsible for our increasingly fascist, neo-liberal form of government.

This is the reason that we still don’t have national health care. This is the reason we have such a massive military budget. This is the reason for lack of investment in infrastructure and education. This is the reason why the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

Why is Congress allowing this Supreme Court ruling to corrupt our democracy and allow corporate control and ruin our American lives? It seems possible to me that many Supreme Justices are on the take. This system of oligarchs was put in place with support of the church and the Republican Party, the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society and many other institutions. They legalized bribery through Citizens United and its predecessors, and have forced their will on us through manipulation of our sacred vote. It’s all done through the ancient power of money, and America has a lot of money.

Even the Christian Bible says that “the love of money is the root of all evil!” Our system of government, now warped by the laws and the decisions of the Supreme Court, has the roots of this evil planted. Will we allow the evil root to grow or will we chop it down?

About Jack Jones

Jack Jones writes for Democracy Chronicles from Chicago’s south suburbs where he grew up. He is a union electrician Local 134, certified minister from Berean University, AYSO board member and coach, basketball coach, Cub Scout leader, husband, father and social participant. Jack considers himself a gourmet junk food chef, political writer, musician and likes to contribute to the world around him. A former deacon and chaplain at Cook County Jail in Chicago, he feels that our out-of-control corporate, religious and political environment is to blame for many of the problems in the world today. Jack believes we need to get money out of politics and that the church should take care of people instead of trying to get hypocrites elected to public office.
