Resisting the Erosion of Democracy: A Call to Fight Back

Resisting the Erosion of Democracy: A Call to Fight BackThe inability to freely express thoughts and feelings is profoundly unsettling. Living in an era marked by the remnants of Reagan’s policies, characterized by fascist and ultra-conservative Christian ideologies, exacerbates this discomfort. This period in our nation’s history is further marred by actions against foreign journalists like Julian Assange and the emergence of political figures such as Donald Trump. Trump’s intimidation tactics and threats against those who dissent, coupled with his past statements on punishing individuals for libel, represent a stark challenge to our freedom of expression.

The pervasive message from the Republican party to “be scared, very scared” has deeply influenced our societal psyche. It has cultivated an environment where the less privileged are coerced into submission, urged to accept their “place” with blind loyalty and deference to those above them. This strategy has been akin to a two-pronged assault on our democracy, significantly undermining the pillars of free expression and equitable education. The abolition of the Fairness Doctrine under Reagan allowed for a skewed representation of news, distorting the public’s understanding of truth. Furthermore, Reagan’s policies towards education sought to gatekeep knowledge and suppress any burgeoning awareness of exploitation or revolutionary thought among the lower classes.

These measures have pushed our freedoms and the very essence of democracy to the brink, leaving them gasping for survival. A pervasive fear of speaking out has gripped the general populace, fostering a societal environment riddled with anxiety and despair. This sentiment stems from a collective realization that our power to shape the future or challenge the status quo seems increasingly out of reach. The dream that once united us has been eroded, leaving behind broken promises and a pervasive sense of resignation.

However, surrendering to this state of paranoid apathy is not an option. It is imperative that we muster our collective strength and resilience to oppose these forces. With nothing left to lose, our only course is to relentlessly fight back, reclaiming the ideals and freedoms that have been systematically eroded. The time for action is now—to engage with unyielding determination and never yield in the face of adversity. Our future, our democracy, depends on our willingness to stand up, speak out, and fight for what we believe in, time and time again.

About Jack Jones

Jack Jones writes for Democracy Chronicles from Chicago’s south suburbs where he grew up. He is a union electrician Local 134, certified minister from Berean University, AYSO board member and coach, basketball coach, Cub Scout leader, husband, father and social participant. Jack considers himself a gourmet junk food chef, political writer, musician and likes to contribute to the world around him. A former deacon and chaplain at Cook County Jail in Chicago, he feels that our out-of-control corporate, religious and political environment is to blame for many of the problems in the world today. Jack believes we need to get money out of politics and that the church should take care of people instead of trying to get hypocrites elected to public office.

Thanx Steve, these sentiments have been a agitant. in my craw, for some time now. The need to express them and receive, encouragement is very helpful and healing. Sometimes trying to be well informed, leaves you lonely without confidant to share meaningful discourse. Some of our countrymen, in the passive state to fit into the status quo, have abandoned the sense of individual freedom within the establishment and have threatened the liberty of the community, in so doing. The striving to fit in, to say the continual yes, where there should have been resistance or at least an air of questioning has destroyed our perspective and has left some in a pool of depression. Questioning and trying to fix problems within our reach brings freedom, at times alienation from the skeptical but a occasional that a boy, from a like minded friend and patriot. I appreciate your kind word of appreciation, Jack

A poet and singer once said, “Money doesn’t talk, it swears.”

Well, there’s lots of swearing going on these days in what passes for our political discourse.

After all, our Supreme Court believes that spending unlimited amounts of money to get your way in a political debate is the ultimate exercise of Free Speech.

So, that a boy. Keep it up. And I bet it didn’t even cost you a penny to get this published at Democracy Chronicles.

        Just saying.
