Russian Punk Band Member Ends Hunger Strike

Jailed Pussy Riot Dissident Russian Punk Band Member

A Russian punk band member from the group known as Pussy Riot has ended her hunger sources according to sources in the prison where she is being detailed and also according to her husband. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova who is being held in a prison in the Russian republic of Mordovia of Russia on charges of what Vladimir Putin and Russian government officials have called acts of “hooliganism” and for songs of protest against Russian authorities which took place on February 21st, 2012, in Moscow’s main Orthodox Church.

Russian Punk Band Member Pussy RiotA source inside the prison where Nadezhda is currently being held has confirmed that she ended her 2 week long hunger strike which began on Monday September 23rd, 2013. The hunger strike was in response to the working conditions that prisoners inside the jail have been made to work in while doing time in penal colony 14 in a Mordovia jail.

In an open letter to the media, Nadezhda went onto explain why she was conducting her hunger strike and what her motivation was. Nadezhda went onto explain how in her colony, penal colony 14, her work brigade are being forced to work in shifts that start at 7:30 am and run all the way to 12:30 am.  In addition to the long work shifts, the prisoners of penal colony 14 have also been complaining to the guards about, where in one instance, a prisoner asked a guard if she can “go to sleep at 8pm instead of 12:30 am because she wasn’t feeling good.”

According to her husband, Pyotr Verizlov, Nadezhda will stay in the prisons hospital for what he termed “several weeks” until she recovers back to full health. Her 2 year sentence is set to end in March when she is scheduled to be released.
