The Freedom in the World 2012 survey is a very useful tool for democracy advocates and can be interesting and valuable to everyone in the world, young and old. The survey functions as a snapshot of history giving us access to the current state of democracy and civil rights worldwide. Here is a link that has an interesting summary and the report itself in a pdf:

The report highlights the effect of the Arab Spring on democratic progress, one year on, as well as the push-back from dictatorships.  Tunisia is shown to have made tremendous progress while some places in the region, like Bahrain and Yemen, have seen horrific responses to protests.  Also, included in the legendary Map of World Freedom.  The full map is hard to find but it is included in the pdf on their site.  Enjoy!
