I attended the March 1st march, nationally organized under the title “Immigrants Stay – Trump/Pence Must Go!”, to take some pictures and video. Everyone was told to wear black for last night’s event held at Union Square in New York City. Here is the info on the march provided at the Facebook event announcement:

We will gather in the streets to stand against Trump’s comprehensive and white supremacist attacks on immigrants and immigration. Stand with DACA youth, with TPS recipients, with all those in detention right now. Stand with those whose families have already been torn apart and those who live each day with that fear. Trump’s “Wall” is a potent symbol and instrument of terror that concentrates the shattering of old norms and cementing Trump’s new order of: America First…Make America White Again.

This all-around assault on immigrants is a horror. It is also the linchpin and battering ram of the whole fascist program being hammered into place by the Trump/Pence Regime. Fascism is a qualitative change in how society is governed. Fascism foments and relies on xenophobic nationalism, racism, misogyny, and the aggressive re-institution of oppressive “traditional values.” Once in power, fascism essentially eliminates traditional democratic rights.

Other organizers of the event included the Seed Project, a “nonviolent organization fighting for permanent protection for undocumented youth”. They posted this call to attract event attendees:

The Seed Project thanks you for standing up for Dreamers and all immigrants today! We’re with you! Today, we’re calling on people nationwide to wear black and observe 11 minutes of silence for all 11 million undocumented immigrants. If you’re in DC, JOIN the Seed Project today and in NYC, JOIN Refuse Fascism and others at Union Square 5:30pm!

Speakers from RefuseFascism.org addressed a crowd of around 50 people or so who came out last night to Union Square NYC to bring more awareness to the plight of immigrants and the brutality of ICE, the national immigration enforcement service.

To see the live stream of the event see my Facebook page or take play this video:

Travis Morales of RefuseFascism.org speaking about the history the U.S. has of allowing illegal border crossing in other countries for years which puts the U.S. in no position to be telling immigrants, who were forced to flee by U.S. policies, that they cannot enter this country seeking to escape violence.
