When truth becomes relative: political crisis in a post-Trump era

When truth becomes relative: political crisis in a post-Trump era
Liz Cheney (image source), daughter of former Vice President, Dick Cheney, is one of the few who have maintained much honesty, independence, and integrity in a Republican party now overrun by Trump loyalists

I never imagined that I would see the day when I would be backing Liz Cheney. Part of the reason is that I’m still pissed off about the Iraq/Syria War and her father’s involvement and influence in getting it started. Our country has so many issues that you are made at times to pick at the lesser of two evils instead of the ideal candidate. I’m not saying that Liz Cheney is evil and I believe that you should not judge children by their parents’ sins but the conservative right-leaning actions of both parties have been a concern of mine and on my radar for a long time now.

Not to always talk in anecdotes, but it seems we have gone from the frying pan and into the fire with the Republican Party in my opinion. When George W. Bush was in power with his right-hand man, Vice President Dick Cheney (Liz Cheney’s father), the world was not in a safe place thanks to Al Qaeda and the warmongering whims of Bush/Cheney-style American imperialism. With team Bush/Cheney at the helm, it was the season of chicken hawks as well as draft dodging hypocrites. Be that as it may, we now have a different kind of lunatic fringe of the Republican Party beating up on all dissenters.

Today, sitting congresspeople are traveling to other states to speak out against fellow Republicans who won’t get behind and worship at the Trump idol. They refuse to denounce the January 6th insurrection attempt. Florida Representative Matt Gaetz is among the most passionate Trump worshipers in Congress and on several fronts as we’ve heard from the tabloids, and the ongoing investigation into alleged commercial sex acts with underage women, concerning this outspoken politician. The fact that fellow Republicans have managed to get Liz Cheney removed from House GOP Conference chair and possibly will try to remove other Republican legislators from office who won’t follow the extreme blind loyalty/commitment to Trump as the faultless savior and leader of the Republican Party is appalling in my estimation.

The issue at hand isn’t isolated but even Marjorie Taylor Greene has been out in public in a vicious wolf-like intensity in these and has been harassing other congresswomen like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and freshmen congresswoman Marie Newman for her support of LGBTQ legislation. This crazy train of sorts is upsetting as well as alarming. Should our political system exist or play under the same rules as the Roman Coliseum? Or should our representatives in Congress try to behave with a sound mind as upstanding and respectable memebers of The United States Congress?

The reason why we are here is that the truth has become relative just like our morals. If we can lie our way into an unjust war and kill millions, as well as overthrow democratically elected officials the world over without impunity, do you think that we will behave appropriately in the very chambers of power concerning our nation? We have become violent and the chickens have come home to roost.

So what’s next? That’s what all the level-headed citizens of the world are worried about. It could be anything at this point? But the fact that the derelict edge of the Republican Party feels that they can’t go on without ex-President Donald Trump as their supreme leader sounds like a potentially scary handing over of power and submission to an ex-President that I feel should not only be impeached but imprisoned for past offenses and unethical neglect of duty that caused the death of hundreds of thousands of lives in this pandemic.

The reason why Trump gets away with it is because the violations have been so monumental that we can’t even put our heads around them. Normal people don’t act this way, so the normal majority can’t and won’t understand the complexity of Trump’s crimes or the effect that they will have on our country.

I’m not saying that our nation should behave like we are living on the set of a “leave it to beaver” episode but I believe that we should have candidates available for our selection that won’t necessarily bring on the end of the world potentially at any given moment. We need candidates for political and legislative office who strive to get along with others and help us to become positive agents in society. We seek honest like-minded individuals for representatives.
