Why Trump Should Step Down

Why Trump Should Step Down

President Trump should step down. He has yet to articulate a consistent vision for the country – except, it seems, to undermine our democratic institutions, enrich himself through relationships with foreign governments and corporations eager to exploit us, and, ultimately, weaken the nation through his failure to lead effectively.

There should be a national movement calling for his resignation. He is clearly out of his depth, and he is surrounded by people who either lack the skill or the courage to tell him the truth. At this point, following the path of Richard Nixon – taking that final walk from the White House and stepping down—may be the most dignified course of action left to him.

If he completes his term, we will be left starting afresh, facing an uphill battle to rebuild what has been lost. Many Americans are already bracing for difficult times ahead. A growing number are losing hope, and the ambition that once defined this country is fading. There is a widespread sense of unease and even depression, brought on by the uncertainty, instability, and deep dysfunction of his leadership.

I have never witnessed such an unprofessional approach to power at this level. The world is moving forward, while we are falling behind. We are no longer seen as a leader, but increasingly dismissed, resented, and ignored. This administration has dragged down the country’s reputation, leaving us to prove our worth all over again. We’ve lost credibility, and the integrity of our name has been compromised. Our promises no longer carry the same weight. We are becoming a pariah at international forums and global councils.

How far we have fallen – from being a respected global leader to a nation ridiculed and diminished. Even our closest allies have publicly criticized our behavior, especially in response to the imposition of aggressive trade policies and tariffs. We are being replaced, and even abandoned, by those who once stood with us.

Domestically, tax policies have favored billionaires, and the administration has repeatedly advanced schemes that enrich the few at the expense of the many. American citizens are being taken advantage of, while Congress, the Senate, and the President himself appear to have been bought – and sold us out. Even the Supreme Court has played a role, clearing the way for policies that have hollowed out vital programs.

Medicaid, Medicare, public education, student loans, all have been affected – sacrificed to provide tax breaks that we cannot afford and that the wealthiest among us do not need. This is not governance. It’s time for these individuals to step down. Those who have enabled this unraveling of public trust should follow the President out of the White House and leave room for recovery.

About Jack Jones

Jack Jones writes for Democracy Chronicles from Chicago’s south suburbs where he grew up. He is a union electrician Local 134, certified minister from Berean University, AYSO board member and coach, basketball coach, Cub Scout leader, husband, father and social participant. Jack considers himself a gourmet junk food chef, political writer, musician and likes to contribute to the world around him. A former deacon and chaplain at Cook County Jail in Chicago, he feels that our out-of-control corporate, religious and political environment is to blame for many of the problems in the world today. Jack believes we need to get money out of politics and that the church should take care of people instead of trying to get hypocrites elected to public office.

Lots of promises are always made, trying to get our vote. I’m glad you’re engaging your efforts for our countries future. According to Trump everything was going to be butterflies and rainbows but we know what the reality is. Holding his feet to the fire, is always the solution.
