Democracy Chronicles

Will It Be Ok?

by Jack Jones - February 11, 2022

The question that I have and I believe that many of us concerned citizens have as well is, will it be ok? We are not after perfect compliance on the part of business to ethical behavior or even fair play on any level. We are not anticipating a come-to Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, or even Thomas Paine moment for the rich and powerful but just the possibility of the continuation of our way of life and democracy as we know it!

The actions of multinational corporations and their control of our monopolized media conglomerates have made new or practical ideas seem impractical or abhorrent in their game of media manipulation and right-wing propaganda in our country as of late. I feel the people who believe such rhetoric are even digging in and increasingly feel that everything is an attack against them and on their way of life instead of a practical way of addressing current problems like the global pandemic, National Healthcare, and voting rights. I also believe these issues should have been made plain to see for all involved in our communities and decision-makers among us, but a concerted partisan divide in all things has been pushed in an agenda and especially the news or so-called news outlets that has left us vulnerable like never before.

Without a way to make us safe from the vile disinformation that could very well end our nation’s future as well as our lives as we know it, the accelerating nature of confusion, distrust, and potentially violence is starting to grip our country and the world around us. These trends of far-right and fascism seeking behaviors have taken shape in places like Hungary with an increasing number of countries modeling this alternative to democracy including in the United States where it was advanced under the Trump Administration and by news outlets like Fox News. They are constantly flirting and courting with such leaders like Hungary’s Viktor Orbán and his strong man approach to governance.

W0rld War II started with similar political backsliding in Italy under Mussolini and Germany under Adolf Hitler’s rule. I believe now is the time to strike back and especially strike down the de-regulation of the Fairness Doctrine that the Republican demigod and ex-President Ronald Reagan instituted for pro-business economic reasons but has left our nation vulnerable like no other foe or enemy the universe can muster. That consequential decision on the Fairness Doctrine that ex-President Reagan made is the reason for the confusion and many of the bad decisions that we have made in The United States in the following years.

These alternative news sources are played in many homes and especially gas stations and businesses around the United States leaving many less inclined to knowing anything and much less the truth. The result is a divided country along partisan lines without the ability to come together and brainstorm to fix our problems and much less compromise and make progress in our communities for our collective futures. The very act of reinstating shoring-up and prosecuting violators of the obliterated Fairness Doctrine is the first necessary step for the resurrection of our great country and our democratic values for the good of our citizens and the future of mankind.
